Thank you...
Thank you is the topic of today's blog...a word we don't always hear or use as often as we should. That is why I am making the time to do that...thank you!
I wanted to first thank the Greater Easthampton Chamber of Commerce for hosting the 35th Annual Fall Festival last Saturday. The event was, in my eyes a huge success. The weather was perfect and those who attended the event took full advantage and enjoyed the events inside the gym as well as outside.
I also wanted to thank everyone who stopped by to visit us at the Fall Festival. It was nice to see everyone - our current and future customers, as well as friends and neighbors. The event takes a lot of preparation but when all is said and done it is well worth the "jet lag" you experience afterward!
Thank you for your understanding of our being closed yesterday. Rick and I attended a business seminar focusing on websites. Talk about overwhelming - I walked away with more notes in that brief period than I expected. We learned things we've done right with our website and more importantly learned areas we need to improve upon. Over the next week or so, I will be working to make those changes and welcome your feedback on the success or lack thereof in terms of what you are looking for from our site.
Today is Customer Appreciation Day - lots of goodies to share with everyone - so if you are reading this, please stop by - we're here until 7 tonight! Without you, we wouldn't be here - Thank you!

Off Topic -
This is totally off topic but I need to get the information out there - As a long time listener of a local radio station, I felt I had to comment on a topic that was discussed just the other day. Unfortunately, my comments were taken out of context and used as the focus of this particular DJ's weekly "commentary" where I was refered to as Mrs. Toll Collector. Since he twisted my words to further "enhance" his view, I wanted to set the record start. Here is the copy of the e-mail that I sent. I have taken the liberty to highlight a very important portion that everyone should be aware of. Thank you for letting me clarify things...
"As the wife of a Toll Collector, I took offense at your comments regarding the Toll Collectors on the Massachusetts Turnpike. Why are you wishing someone to lose their job?
"Simply, don’t use the road if you don’t want to pay. It’s a toll road and there are alternate routes you can take to get to your destination.
"The media needs to double check their facts – the average salary is $70,000? If that were true, then my husband’s paycheck is greatly lacking. That figure includes overtime and is not the base salary.
"When you stated 'anyone can do it, even a trained chimp,' I think you need to be a collector for a day. It’s not just a matter of giving a ticket and taking money. If that was the case, there would be more people applying for the job. It’s my suggestion that the media as well as each Senator and Congressman be required to be a 'Collector for a Day' to experience first hand the situations that patrons put these collectors through on a daily basis – tickets with human feces and other bodily fluids on them, money that has been in patrons’ mouths, attitudes that patrons have when making and completing transactions at the booths, etc. (It’s shameful how these men and women are treated everyday.) This 'Collector for a Day' should be without prior media or public knowledge because you know as well as I do that should the public get a hold of that information ahead of time that the patrons would show the 'nicer side' while you were there. Until you’ve walked in someone’s shoes, you have no idea what it’s like to be them or do their job; in several managerial positions I’ve held we were required to take a day and work as someone not in management, so should those in the media and government.
"A recent environmental study was done and it was found that Turnpike employees are just behind coal miners with poor air quality that they breathe every day – coal miners are the highest. Think about the air everyday at the booth, breathing in diesel fuel, brake dust (asbestos), etc. So this 'occupational hazard' as you called it may mean serious health issues later in life.
"They are also out in the extreme weather conditions – unlike other Turnpikes up and down the East Coast, the Massachusetts Turnpike booths are not air conditioned nor are the heating units up-to-date.
"Right now, the road is maintained with the revenues collected from the tolls. Have you thought about what it would cost tax payers to take over the Turnpike? Those who do not use the road would have to pay extra taxes to support it. For those who do use the road, know that should the State take over the Pike that the road conditions (especially during storms) would deteriorate. Having driven to a schedule surgery appointment in the early morning hours on I-91 in a snowstorm, a 20-minute trip turned into a 1 ½ hour trip, simply because there were no plows or sanders on the road. However, had I driven on the Pike (which wasn’t an option), sanders and plows are always at the ready when a storm threatens and are out in force when it hits, it would have only been a 20-minute trip.
"These are things that the media and general public should be made aware of – it’s not simply, 'oh, the tolls are going up again,' it’s a matter of safety on the road. It’s funny how the USPS can raise the price of stamps without anyone staging any kind of 'protest' but raise the tolls and all the media takes a hold of that and runs.
"Some public education about this needs to be done! And that education should start with the media! "

The View from 56 Cottage Street . . .
with a “break in the action,” I look out the store front window to see the colors changing on the trees - fall is coming! That means different things to everyone - to me, I love the crisp, fresh fall air and the temperatures moderate to a more tolerable level; my kind of weather! Another plus is not having to run the a/c or turn the heat on just yet (sorry utility companies)!
Of course, fall also means the start of school and dance season too! As we are at the start of the season, I welcome a start-up conversation about how the year is going so far, news of events going on at your studio and tips you’d like to share with other dancers or parents of dancers. So if you get a “break in the action” jot a note ... we've changed blog servers to make adding comments easier so please add your feedback!
Now …. back to work!
